Dr. Allen Belshaw is a Board Certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons who has been serving Northwestern Colorado since 1998. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at the University of Utah.

A nurse from the hospital will call you a few days in advance to go over the time of your procedure and any details you may need to know.
How do I get a colonoscopy?
What is an EGD?
An EGD, which stand for esophagogastroduodenoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure that examines the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. The test involves passing an endoscope down your throat and along the length of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
Will I get multiple bills for my surgery?
Yes. You will get a hospital bill from UCHealth, a bill from Western Surgical Group (Dr. Belshaw), and a bill from Elk River Anesthesia.
How do I prepare for my surgery?
Preparing for surgery involves several steps to ensure everything goes smoothly:
- Follow Pre-Surgery Instructions: Your surgeon or healthcare provider will provide specific instructions such as fasting requirements, medications to avoid, and any necessary tests or evaluations.
- Arrange Transportation: Ensure you have someone available to drive you to and from the surgery.
- Plan for Recovery: Set up a comfortable recovery space at home with necessary supplies such as medications, bandages, and comfortable clothing.
- Follow Dietary Guidelines: Adhere to any dietary restrictions provided by your healthcare provider to minimize complications during and after surgery.
- Communicate Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or allergies you have to prevent any adverse reactions.
- Mentally Prepare: Stay calm and mentally prepare yourself for the surgery. Understand the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes.
- Arrange Support: Enlist the help of friends or family members to assist you with daily tasks during your recovery period.

How do I prepare for my colonoscopy?
We can’t overstate the importance of a thorough colonoscopy prep. A proper clean-out ensures that your colon is evaluated in the best possible way. Where can I buy Dulcolax and Miralax? Do I need a prescription?
Dulcolax and Miralax are both over the counter and do not need a prescription. You will be able to find them at any pharmacy. If you have trouble, ask the pharmacist to point you in the right direction.
What is the recommended aftercare for rectal surgery?
The following are our suggested supplies for rectal surgical aftercare:
- Mineral Oil – 5cc’s by mouth three times daily for 3 days
- Colace – 100mg by mouth twice daily for 5 days
- Metamucil – 2 heaping teaspoons by mouth twice daily with significant amounts of water until your follow-up appointment
- Perineal cold pack – these can be found at Walgreens or Amazon.
